Think globally act locally APPLIES to buying ethical foods. Let me explain- you think globally about forced child labor, or child slaves, and you act locally to buy products that do not encourage these things.

What you are advocating is think locally (your own country) act locally. Since I'm already doing that, and I'm sure Grainne is too, I don't see what your problem is. Did you see my post about CYA? Did you ever read my posts about teaching in the alternative school, where many of the students had pretty severe problems? No, you probably didn't, or I guess you ignored that.

People who are interested in children are probably already working for them here- I know I am,(and I suspect Grainne is) and I don't expect to be able to force people who do not care about children, to care about them. I DO think that ignorance may be a factor in supporting some global evils- because a lot of people do not know about child slaves supporting certain industries, so it makes sense to post about that, since people would not know about it. But people ought to know quite a bit more about abuse here, since it frequently gets front page coverage.

"Yet there seems to be a desire disregard that dirty little fact and to try to deflect the discussion to one of global issues such as fair trade coffee and the practices of the evil corporations. "

The above statement is just ridiculous. EVERY time abortion comes up I tell people they ought to be working to save the children ALREADY here, who are victims of abuse and neglect- and I've been doing that since 1996 (not that it seems to do a damn bit of good, but there you are). I don't know that anyone here isn't working for children, and if they don't care about them they certainly aren't going to admit it. So what, exactly, did you want to discuss? How vital the Head Start program is? How important it is to have nutritious food in school for kids- because many kids are not being nourished adequately at home? (I seem to recall some arguments here about that topic- perhaps you should hunt those people down and tell them to start thinking more about children's issues? I'd like some help on that one, because I didn't feel like I was getting a lot of support.)

Why don't you explain exactly what kind of "discussion" you want, and we'll see if we can oblige- since I often post about children's issues, and work with children, and have a great interest in their health and well being. Please be specific about what you want. Child abuse and neglect is a crime already, how would you like us to supplement law enforcement and social services? Unfortunately using child slaves is not yet a crime. I hope you don't expect us to ignore the children of the world, in order to make you feel we are concentrating on children here. It is possible to care about all children, and it makes more sense to me to do that, since if children are precious, ALL children are precious.

Would you like to talk about the child abuse that goes on in Catholic churches? It's hard to get a handle of the scope of the problem, or prosecute the cases as normal cases are prosecuted, because the church tends to interfere and squash evidence and spirit away the criminals- shall we discuss it?

Pope Benedict XVI are facing claims of obstruction of justice. The Observer has got hold of a letter, signed by Ratzinger, where bishops dealing with child sex-abuse claims were told to keep the suspicions secret. The order was made in letter sent to every Catholic bishop in May 2001.

Pope Benedict XVI faced claims last night he had 'obstructed justice' after it emerged he issued an order ensuring the church's investigations into child sex abuse claims be carried out in secret.

The order was made in a confidential letter, obtained by The Observer, which was sent to every Catholic bishop in May 2001.

It spells out to bishops the church's position on a number of matters ranging from celebrating the eucharist with a non-Catholic to sexual abuse by a cleric 'with a minor below the age of 18 years'. Ratzinger's letter states that the church can claim jurisdiction in cases where abuse has been 'perpetrated with a minor by a cleric'.

The letter states that the church's jurisdiction 'begins to run from the day when the minor has completed the 18th year of age' and lasts for 10 years.

Daniel Shea, the lawyer for the two alleged victims who discovered the letter, said: 'It speaks for itself. You have to ask: why do you not start the clock ticking until the kid turns 18? It's an obstruction of justice.'

A spokeswoman in the Vatican press office declined to comment when told about the contents of the letter. 'This is not a public document, so we would not talk about it,' she said.

This discussion started with you saying you wished I would give more attention to children and less to animals. Since I already give a lot of attention to children, I thought I would show everyone how they could, as well. While it is true that there is a lot of abuse and neglect of children in America, what exactly do you suggest I do about it as an individual? Of course I would report it to the authorities if I suspected it, but aside from that, the thing that would help with the problem would be to pay more taxes to support all of the programs that support families and children and police and rehabilitation and mental health, etc. I am one of those people who has said publicly I would like to pay more taxes for these programs. I am not sure what else I can do.

It is really easy to help child slaves and child laborers all over the world by changing the kind of coffee, chocolate and sugar you use. As I have said before, the way you spend your food dollars is vitally important. And yet the cost is so little, to help millions of children.

I do think conservatives and libertarians are more selfish than liberals. I have said it before. Liberals by definition are always trying to help the downtrodden and do good works and regulate corporations so they do not totally destroy the environment. Liberatarians and conservatives believe in free markets, which are very destructive of third world peoples and landscapes. They want to preserve their capital, and protect their right to consume products that are harmful or produced in extremely unethical and cruel ways. It is not my goal to make this personal, but in response to your challenge to think more about children, Ionesco and I posted lots of ways to help children, and yet you did not seem excited about this at all. You wanted to help local children, and yet all the world's children need our help. So I am really perplexed as to what you want me to do at this point. Perhaps you could explain it in a different way so I can understand better.
