I've never seen him do anything for Dem candidates. Ever. His personal politics seem more libertarian. They were molded in the 60's when he, the son of a conservative Republican, volunteered for combat and saw first hand out screwed-up that war was. He then saw what a liar Nixon was, why JFK, RFK and MLK were really murdered by the rightwing, and he put it all together. Like millions of other all-American kids did too. PLATOON was maybe the greatest ever war film nomatter if you're left or right. It was about the great divide in this country between red and blue state attitudes. The redneck killer Barnes vs. the enlightened rainbow warior Elias. Both great warriors. Both patriotic. But one a hard-drinking redneck, the other a pot-smoking mystic. You can root for either one you like. Stone is obviously biased toward Barnes, making him the villain, but considering Vietnam, Nixon, Kent State, Mi Lai massaacre and the JFK and MLK killings, why wouldn't he side with Elias? The 60's was a decade of disgrace for the rightwing. Both sides made mistakes, but the right betrayed us deeply. We still have not paid off the Vietnam War debt. And 55,000 killed. All for no sane reason whatsoever. This is why the smearvet types are trying to revise history. Deep-down they know the truth and are ashamed, but they are still denying the atrocities and lies ever happened, and that the Phoenix Program and illegal war in Cambodia and Laos ever took place. In fact they're back to saying "we could have won if it weren't for those damn war protesters". So why didn't they win for the first five years? They're basically all liars. And what the hell were we doing over there anyway? Looking back, it was all so pointless. A huge tragedy. Bravo to Oliver Stone for making several great films on the subject, even if he does drink and get high. At least he's no hypocrite like Rush Limbaugh.
