Actually everyone does not receive it.

My dad is a retired fire rescue captain for a major city. He gets a pension and health benefits that far exceed what he would have received from ssan.

His real estate investments did even better.


You are right. It was possible to opt out. But not for individuals; only for institutions.

The school superintendent, long time in office, in the small Texas town in which I grew up, refused to participate in SS because it was "socialist." The retired teachers still get angry about that. This, despite the fact, that the teachers pensions in Texas are halfway decent. Or so I am told.

My point about "everyone receiving it" was simply there were no income tests.
