Exit polls show French reject EU constitution By Anne Stanley
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Projections based on exit polls indicate that French voters, who turned out in estimated record numbers Sunday, rejected the proposed European Union constitution, the Associated Press reported. Three polls, which did not include results from Paris and the southern city of Lyon, gave the "no" vote between 54.5% and 55.6%, the AP said. Polls late last week showed that 54% of the French electorate was against the constitution, despite some last-minute lobbying by President Jacques Chirac. It is the first binding public ballot on the EU constitution, which must be ratified by all 25 member states. Nine countries have so far ratified the constitution.
