Thirty years ago I could do that with what I think is some fairness. Today, not so. Do you dispute that liberals are always trying to help the downtrodden? Always? Absolutely I dispute that. When push comes to shove, I have yet to meet the person outside of perhaps Gandhi who put helping the downtrodden above self-interest. If liberals were "always" trying to help the downtrodden, they would be giving every penny of their income and wealth to the downtrodden. But Barbra Streisand, for one example, isn't giving her cliffside mansion to house the poor. Yes, she does things that are trying to help the downtrodden. But she also is perfectly happy spending quite a bit of money on her own luxury when that money, if she were "always" helping the downtrodden, could buy a lot of meals for the starving or providing a lot of housing for the homeless. Do I dispute that mnany liberals try to help the downtrodden? Not at all. By the same token, I think many conservatives try to help the downtrodden. They often disagree on what is the best way to help people. But that doesn't mean they don't both have an equally pure intention to help. Take one classic example. Do you consider the unwanted unborn child a downtrodden person, or not? If you do, then you have to agree that conservatives are generally trying to help this group of downtrodden and liberals are trying to destroy them. If on the other hand you don't consider the unwanted unborn child a downtrodden person but consider the mother potentially bearing an unwanted child to be a downtrodden person, then you will believe that the liberals are trying to help the downtrodden and the conservatives to damage them. Both are trying in their own way to help a downtrodden segment of the population. How you look at whether their approach is or is not helping the downtrodden depends entirely on your definition of who is downtrodden and what real help constitutes.
