- extremely mountainous regions were difficult to occupy until after WW2, until the nuclear stuff and "the sputnik" (which circled above everyone, "duck and cover") - the serbs and (some of the) afghans were driven higher and higher into their mountaines during their repeated occupations. However, Switzerland was in the middle of something, while the serbs, afghans and the tibetanians were not. HongKong, on the other hand, was just besides a huge market, additionally with great sanctions. That is, all very special cases.. Just as Iraq is a special case, the "triangle" has no mountains, no huge deserts, but some great urban regions.
