When we look back at what we did and what we got for it and compare it to todays society it seems like we got the short end, yet, anyone I ever talk to who did as we did seems to have made out well in life. I wonder if this coddling of todays society is the reason for the crime and other social ills that exist today. Incidentally, besides mowing lawns and such my first REAL job was watering orange groves BY HAND. We filled 55 gallon drums with water and had them in the back of a pickup truck. We parked that truck in the middle of the grove and WALKED through the sugar sand with two 5 gallon buckets (one in each hand) filled with water to the end of the row. Bent down, made a moat around each tree and poured a half a bucket in each tree then back to the truck to refill. For that I was paid 50 cents an hour and worked from dawn to dusk. Builds muscles and character!! jdn
