Zonder, Yup, a VAT sounds like a variation on our sales tax, except sales taxes can vary from region to region and are tacked onto the price of the goods and services, rather than figured into the total price. The exception to this would be cigarettes, gasoline, liquor, etc., which have built in taxes in addition to the tacked on prices.

In asking about Laz's age and wife, I have a hunch you are referring to the
fictional Heinlein character from which he draws his SI alias. I must confess
to not having read any Heinlein. I know. I have been told. I am little more than an illiterate dunce. <g>

In most places in Europe, there is both income tax AND VAT, which is double taxation in my humble opinion. You get taxed on the money you make and then you get taxed again when you spend the part the state didn't get its hands on in the first place.
Why stay there? You are perfectly adapted to the US tax system? :-)
