However, spot prices are expected to stop falling this month. Taiwanese DRAM makers saw their gross margins slump to around 16-27% in the first quarter of 2005, down from 32-45% in the second half of last year. Therefore, to increase their margins, some DRAM makers have reallocated their capacity to other products such as NAND flash or foundry orders. Also, as makers ramp up capacity for DDR2 chips, the bit growth for DDR memory will run short of demand in July and August. If DRAM supply trends in this fashion, DRAM spot and contract prices will stabilize or be slightly up in June. NAND flash spot prices plunge 6-13% for high-density chips Spot prices dropped as much as US$2 some days last week, leading to spot prices for most high-density NAND flash chips being priced below contract prices. The spot prices for 8Gbit and 2Gbit chips fell 6-10% below contract prices while spot prices for 1Gbit to 8Gbit chips all dropped at least 6% this week. However, 1Gbit and 4Gb parts are still sold at a premium over contract prices. Low-density chip demand shifting from 512Mbit to 1Gbit Handset demand is still the main driving force for the current NAND flash market and the mainstream memory card size for new handset models due out in the third quarter has now moved to 128MB (1Gbit). With the mainstream density moving from 64MB to 128MB, demand for NAND flash memory has begun to shift from 512Mb to 1Gbit. As a result, 1Gbit spot prices are still above US$8 while those for 512Mbit have stopped rising and the average spot price now remains at US$5.86.
