You know, I've always been an advocate of total war. What that means is that you go to war as a last resort. But if you go to war, then you pull off the gloves and do what needs to be done. This gentlemen's war crap is for the birds. It simply ends in more Americans getting killed in the long run. Al Qaeda and the other terrorists know that they can count on relatively decent treatment if they get caught. But any one caught by Al Qaeda is a dead man. They abuse our values to our detriment. When you lie with pigs, you will end up smelling like shit. No amount of dressing yourself up in a tuxedo and wearing perfume will erase that smell of shit. Therefore, we in the U.S. need to accept that we are smelling like shit, get over it, and then do what needs to be done. It's too late to turn back. So let's finish this job. Thomas Friedman has an article about what happened in Hama. It was a little village that spawned some Islamic extremists that were fomenting problems for Bashar Assad's father. So Assad's father shelled the place, killing almost everyone, then paved it over and made it into a parking lot. To this day, that lesson hasn't been lost on Islamic extremists in Syria. Friedman calls this Hama Rules, meaning if you want to play in the Middle East, you'd better be prepared to play by Hama rules. Take off the gloves and do what it takes and recognize you cannot escape the fact that you will come out smelling like shit. But people will get the message and will learn not to attack you again.
