sure I know what you mean. Like nobody should be allowed to discuss death without having been there first, right?

As for StarTreck, with 2 boys in the eligible age, of course I have seen a couple of episodes and quite often I found them quite cool. I like the scene described by you. Actually reminds me of another SciFi short story I read 30 years ago, which went something like this:
In some distant future, where everything is done by computers and in particular so all math (we are already there, I guess), some nerd "discovers" how simple math can be done without artificial intelligence!
All he needs is a piece of paper and a pen...

You can imagine how that raises havoc with the "intellectuals" and scientists of his age.
Sure somebody else on our thread read same story.
Somebody always did.

But this one is not up to the quality level of say "Vintage Season" though.
