We had French in my grammar school and it continued all the way until high school....I was exposed to Italian at a young age by my immmigrant Italian grandparents and can speak and understand (but not write) Italian.....Facility with languages is a combination of three things I think...early exposure, continuing exposure and and in some cases an innate ability to be able to pick up different languages....For example as to innate skills, I have two children, one of whom is already a fluent French speaker as a HS freshman, the other struggles as a HS senior with basic conversational French...

From my various travels I can speak enough of several other languages to "get by" in Spanish, German, Portuguese, Japanese and Thai. I have found that learning some of the local tongue goes a long way toward easing your relations with those you come in contact with....even if your grammar is not perfect, I think people appreciate the effort...
