Gemstar-TV Guide Grants Pioneer Corporation an IPG Patent License for European Market LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 30, 2005-- License Builds on Existing Agreement with Pioneer, which Currently Incorporates Gemstar-TV Guide's IPG into its Consumer Electronics Products in North America, Europe and Japan Gemstar-TV Guide International, Inc. (NASDAQ: GMST) has signed a new interactive program guide ("IPG") patent license agreement with Pioneer Corporation. The agreement allows Pioneer to use Gemstar-TV Guide's intellectual property in certain consumer electronics products with non-Gemstar-TV Guide IPGs that are designed for the European market and use "service information" data, which is transmitted freely via a digital broadcast signal. The new deal builds on an existing agreement reached last year between the two companies, in which Pioneer was granted a license to incorporate Gemstar-TV Guide's IPG in North America, Japan and Europe or, for certain products, a license under Gemstar-TV Guide's IPG patents. Under the existing agreement, Pioneer has already incorporated Gemstar-TV Guide's IPG into certain consumer electronics products in Europe, where the IPG is marketed as GUIDE Plus+. "As we continue our successful IPG licensing efforts in Europe, we're pleased to strengthen our relationship with Pioneer with this agreement, which underscores the value of our intellectual property," said Mike McKee, chief operating officer of Gemstar-TV Guide's Consumer Electronics division.
