Really? That seems absurd. Nobody is alive from then. But I suppose some banks are still in operation and they might not like their cash flows of the time inspected too closely.

Ray, it's still a democracy [republic pedantry aside]. People could vote Libertarian if they wanted to and demand a complete opening of the books.

The voters don't want that. They like pork barrel politics and having their hands in the till. Blame it on the voters, not those to whom they give control [though some blame for the current rulers is very understandable]. Germans voted for Adolf Hitler and look where that took them. Indians voted to be poor for half a century [and still are doing so]. South Africa votes to go down the gurgler. Americans get the government they deserve too - I like the saying "Americans have the best politicians money can buy!"
