As a result, a CDU-led government would seek a temporary stop to enlargement, in particular by persuading EU partners to include the option of a privileged partnership in membership talks with Turkey. He stressed, however, that a CDU-led government would not seek to halt the start of talks with Turkey on October 3, nor to block membership for Romania and Bulgaria. He also said that EU integration “would remain a core pillar” of German foreign policy, but that Berlin's ties with Paris should be refocused away from being a “dominant force” within the bloc, towards a “leadership role based of full consultation with other EU members”. * Parliamentary leader Wolfgang Gerhardt averred that A CDU-led government would focus on improving ties with Washington: “The current government has let the transatlantic relationship deteriorate badly.” * Wolfgang Schäuble, the CDU's foreign policy chief, indicated that relations with Russia would be expected to cool, due to concerns over alleged authoritarian tendencies in the Russian government. Schäuble also said that a CDU government would oppose the lifting of the EU weapons embargo on China until common ground was found with Washington. Let's hope that the pundits forecasting a CDU victory are right.
