The real problem was that some self-righteous politicians demonized Saddam to the point of no possibility of negotiations.

I swear, this is Alice through the Looking Glass. Only the demonization prevented negotiations? As for the Stalinist police state, the unprovoked attacks against every neighbor, the crazy decisions, the Anfal campaign, the choice of mass murder, ethnic cleansing and destruction of ecosystems as the first choice tools of statecraft - coupled with utter refusal to ever keep an agreement with the West - none of that could have influenced Western politicians, it was just "self-righteous demonziation".
