Felt was afraid that Nixon would destroy him through the use of lies and smears, as he did to so many who got in his way.

Nixon played hardball. Most Presidents have played hardball, but Nixon played it harder than most.

"Felt was ashamed of what he did, denied to the world that he did it, and was terrified that the FBI would find out and tell the world that what he did was wrong."

Yes he was, but it doesnt mean that he did the wrong thing. He felt he did the right thing even though it violated his long held principles because there was a greater principle at stake. He acted for the greater good as he saw it.
Felt felt (g) that nixon had so overstepped that he had no choice but to guide W&B to the accurate info on what happened. Maybe Felt was wrong as you think but maybe just maybe the new nixonians on this thread could be wrong on this one. Humor me--this happened 30 years ago--maybe youre first response was wrong???

Felt would have been chapter in JFK Profiles in Courage imo.

Unfair comparison.

And Felt was a mature man and Pantano was just a kid. And Felt wore a suit and Pantano a uniform. And Felt was living in a swamp whereas Pantano was in a desert. So what?

They are alike in the way I specified--they found themselves in difficult situations and made tough ethical decisions. If you think I am mistaken in that regard, please tell me how.

Meanwhile, you are free to compare them by your own criteria and come to your own conclusions. I won't call it unfair.

Although I must say it's odd judge the value of what people do on the basis of whether or not they're crowing about it.
