Thats a great article. Noonan writes:

"What Mr. Felt helped produce was a weakened president who was a serious president at a serious time. Nixon's ruin led to a cascade of catastrophic events--the crude and humiliating abandonment of Vietnam and the Vietnamese, the rise of a monster named Pol Pot, and millions--millions--killed in his genocide."

I am interested in the narrow statement above. How different would vietnam and cambodia have been if nixon wasnt brought down? Obviously there would be differences and Ford the caretaker couldnt do as much as nixon who was not tarred by watergate. I just dont know how cons like peggy, patty, benny etc make this leap that somehow vietnam wouldnt have been lost and that pol pot would have been stopped. Anyone want to take a shot at this question???

Blaming the killing fields of Cambodia on Felt is a bit over the top. Tantamount to blaming 9/11 on Linda Tripp and Ken Starr. Come to think of it, I've seen people do that, as well.

I would say they were links in the chain of causation, but they did not set the chain of causation in motion. Sort of like being one domino in a series of dominoes. They didn't start the whole thing going, but if they hadn't been there, maybe things would have turned out differently.

There were plenty of people investigating the Watergate break-in. According to one source, 1500 FBI agents. According to another source, not just Woodward but senior reporters at the Washington Post, as well as the New York Times and the LA Times. Why doesn't Noonan blame them?

Or, for that matter, G. Gordon Liddy, who orchestrated the break-in. Blame Pol Pot on him?

Sorry, I just don't buy it.

The genocide in Cambodia occurred in 1975-1978. Gerald Ford was President in 1975. Carter became president in 1976. If you have to blame an American president, why not Ford or Carter?

In other words, why shoot the messenger?
