re: Really? Didn't he start the EPA? Wasn't he pretty pro-labor?

Yeah. But he didn't play it... he appeared to be ultra-right. I meant "lost" in the sense of public relations. Bush Sr. was the same... regular folks perceived that he didn't care a rats ass about them (maybe correct). Bush Jr learned the PR lesson (through Rove) and that's why he was reelected.

Nixon also did the Ping Pong diplomacy stuff, started talking to China. It was a radical (liberal) departure at the time. People went "what's up with that!!!", everybody was shocked on both sides of the aisle.

Not bad, all in all. Price controls were stupid. Watergate was like Clintons BJ only criminal.

Bottom line, he was a pragmatist, like almost all of our Presidents when they get in office. He did what he thought was best for the country, and had some significant accomplishments.

It's the rare ideologues that put their beliefs above the best interest of the country and fuck everything up, make things much worse rather than incrementally better. Bush Jr is the poster child; I would take Nixon in a heartbeat.

John

He was sort of a Bush Sr., a pragmatist wrt international politics, but lost on domestic policy.

Really? Didn't he start the EPA?

You're kidding.

Wasn't he pretty pro-labor?

You're kidding.

He was a GOPer. Starting the EPA and being pro Union..........well if you are a Republican, its the equivalent of going out and molesting a little girl. Actually, its worse.

Pentagon admits prison guards abused Koran

timesonline.co.uk

To understand fully the classiness of this presidency..........the report re. the Koran abuse findings article was released last nite at 7:15 PM, well after the national news programs had gone on the air in the East and Midwest. Heretofore, that was a tactic frequently used by a second class corps. who knew the info they were about to release would hurt their stock so by releasing it on a Friday, they were hoping to minimize the damage. Now this presidency is resorting to the same cheap tactic hoping it will minimize damage to their credibility. Fortunately, the national news is pointing out the tactic to their viewers.

Sorry. I just did a search and Nixon did start the EPA. Go figure! One thing is clear, the current GOP is not your father's Republican party.......to coin a phrase.
