I agree with (and I like your wording) about a confused military adventure. It's a very bad thing to go to war for ExxonMobil, Halliburton, Bechtel, Israel, the Bush family, the Saud family or anything else other than our own self defense.

However, since we are in a major military operation, the burden should be spread out over the entire country. It should not be put largely upon those needing a job or money for education. It should be spread out amongst all classes of society with no deferrals allowed. It is immoral to do otherwise.

As a practical matter, the military is missing its recruiting goals and overworking national guard and reservists. In addition, there are an estimated 10-15K mercenaries (ok, contractors) in Iraq. Are we going to have a draft or are we going to go the dangerous route of a commercial military?

A general draft would also wake up our apathetic country to what is being done in its name. I'm sure there are some people who don't even know there's a war going on.
