I think we're referring to two different things (correct me if I'm wrong). In the OT, God tells the Jews repeatedly that there's only one god, and whenever they do take a belief in other gods (many did), they're seen as wayward sinners. That's not what I'm talking about, though.

The OT uses multiple names for God, and while its editors and many commentators have reconciled that as one God, most modern biblical historians see it as evidence that the Jews initially believed in different gods (Yahweh and Elohim, I think) and that the monotheistic stuff came later.
