someone can be an ideologue without being intolerant and offensive

I probably would not have put the idea that eloquently. It is a concept worth living.

I am not impinging on the bashers' right to post on dozens of other threads to their heart's delight.

No one can, even SI Admin. If they were ever tempted to, they would drive away their customers. You just keep your corner of the world civil, and you can feel satisfied about that.

where non-partisan views can be exchanged without constant ideological bombardment from elsewhere.

Even centrist ideas can be partisan. You must determine the extent to which civility is the determinate for bans. There are a million continuums of which extremism at each pole can offend the other pole. Which are important to you? I suspect your tolerance will ebb and flow over time.

An example of a different continuum is Authoritarianism. It can be left or right. For example both the Hitler and the Pope are examples of Authoritarianism. Hippies would be one example of Anti-Authoritarianism.

I outlined in my "10 Things" post a while back

I will look for that. It is best to know the rules.
