To repeat something I said in another post, we have a proven track record that no single set of ideas can command a permanent working majority in the US electorate. Most won't endure more than 8-10 years maximum.

I could say that invalidates the ideological approach right there. That's a gross oversimplification but no more unreasonable than many arguments from ideologues about why alternatives to their approach are wrong.

Suppose a candidate picked 10 domestic issues and 10 foreign policy issues, spelled out his/her analysis and program to deal with them and ran as an independent without all the liberal/conservative name calling and political baggage?

What would be the harm in having an agenda-driven president with a pragmatic approach to other issues on top of his/her original 20?

Not being an ideologue doesn't mean believing in nothing at all. It reminds me of people who say you can't be moral without being religious because morality is derived from religious teaching.

Not necessarily. But lots of folks think it's the only reality.
