The Senate 14 is an interesting example because they stepped in to stop a zero-sum process vote on the filibuster. The leadership was ready to play chicken with Hummers and see who would swerve first.

Is that a power play or moderates breaking a logjam between ideologues? We would only know if the 14 hung together as players in future issues.

As for politics as a forum for egalitarians to help their fellow man, that's getting pie-in-the-sky. Congress has always been primarily for attention-seeking power-grubbers - that's the nature of the beast. But there was usually a seasoning of decent-minded modest types who were there mostly to get things done.

As politics got uglier in the 80's and 90's, most of those types retired. Who needs the grief?
