My short answer is that you are bound by the social contracts you make, whether they are explicit or not (see our good friend Socrates :). It is true that democracies are no harbinger of ethics. But it is also true that a true democracy would answer the needs of most of its people. And if 3 out of the 4 people around you have radically different views on life than you, then as a matter of practicality you should move elsewhere, or perhaps work to win them over to your side.

Like it or not you benefit from the loot of war as a member of the society and so it is only fair to contribute to the effort. But of course this argument is valid only in a true democracy which is yet to be realized.
