The gap between the rich and everybody else in this country is fast becoming an unbridgeable chasm. David Cay Johnston, in the latest installment of the New York Times series "Class Matters," wrote, "It's no secret that the gap between the rich and the poor has been growing, but the extent to which the richest are leaving everybody else behind is not widely known."

The gap has been growing ever since I was in school. But now it seems to be accelerating. I question how well this society can exist peacefully with such a gap. Watching the likes of Paris Hilton flaunt their wealth is becoming increasingly repugnant.

"The Mobility Myth"

There was an article in "The International Herald" yesterday which pointed out that in the US the top 0.1% of incomes($1.6 million and up) is expanding their wealth at a rate that far outstrips the other income groups. And that rate is accelerating while every other group is, at best, just treading water.
