Everywhere in New Zealand is highly provincial and insular, although that's a subjective measure - but that's how it seems to me. The capital of Wellington has a slightly Australian feeling to it, like a Hobart, Tasmania.

I haven't been to New Zealand recently enough to know the state of real estate prices now.

I've a coworker who backpacks and drinks beer, often on the same day, in NZ every two to three years. His take is that prices have risen dramatically in the areas he visits in the past 5 years.
