Exactly.

I don't have a need to understand why someone is killing Americans...

At best their posts on SI are ABB, at worse, they sympathize with the enemy thinking it's the path to a new glorious radical Islamic world...

Spoken like a guilt ridden Christian.

War is more than bombs and bullets. If you understand the motivation of the enemy then you can work to take away that motivation with psych ops.

If you don't understand the enemy, you don't understand the conflict. If you don't understand the conflict, you shouldn't be fighting.

The enemy will never be impressed with any measure of "understanding" on our part, nor will their supporters. Therefore, the "understanding" is just to placate our self-guilt and self-loathing.

You can always "stay the course"...even if doing so makes your head bleed and hurt.

Trust me when I tell you that you rarely see the liberal POV very clearly. In fact, looks to me like you do a lot of projecting.
