Applied Materials May Unveil Wafer Inspection Product

<<Credit Suisse First Boston maintained a "neutral" rating on Applied Materials (nasdaq: AMAT - news - people ) and said the chip equipment firm may launch a new product today. Applied Materials announced this morning it will announce a "significant breakthrough" at an investor meeting in New York scheduled for after the close of trading.

"We believe Applied Materials could announce a new 3-D bright field wafer inspection product at this event," said CSFB. "A new product introduction in process control would be consistent with Applied Materials' overall strategy to expand its presence in this segment."

The research firm said it believes Applied Materials has been beta-testing the new tools at customer sites with at least one tool placed at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (nyse: TSM - news - people ). "The $1 billion wafer inspection segment is a part of the overall $3.8 billion process control market," said CSFB.

"According to Dataquest, KLA-Tencor (nasdaq: KLAC - news - people ) dominates the wafer inspection segment with approximately 70% market share; Applied Materials is currently #3 in this segment with approximately 10% market share in this segment." CSFB maintained a $16.50 price target on Applied Materials.>>
