After all this is America, we can solve any problem by throwing enough money at it - even if the problem is preserving Liberty.

Sad but true... In 2004 I voluntered for the US military - I was told Iam too old (44 yrs) and therefore could not get in.

The Navy lost 1,243. USNAV is now understrength.
USAF lost 2,129. USAF is now understrength.
USMC and the Coast Guard both added 40 men.

Seems its only the Army that is suffering enlistment problems. I wonder if it could be related to potential to learn a trade problems? The USMC I presume fulfills its needs cause there are always a fair amount of young men who want to prove something to themselves or others plus the Esprit de Corps that we have always had that lasts a lifetime.
The Navy and Airforce usually have many jobs that could be used in Civilian life. The Coast Guard is just plain a FUN PLACE to be. jdn

The NYTimes article yesterday was very telling regarding parents interceding with their kids and in effect not letting them enlist. Perhaps all these boomer parents had a flashback to Country Joe and the Fish and decided to protect their kids and not send them off to a war which is being run by DOD folks
(1) with no clear idea on how to win &
(2) abused folks who enlisted in the Guard and Reserves, not to mention extended stays for the every day guys.
(3) makes it extremely difficult to deploy american ground power anywhere else while this war goes on.

Give the iraqis a date and all the help we can and let them rise (or fall) to the occasion. The only thing left to be decided for the US at this point is how many names will appear on this monument. From this point on, no unnecessary deaths--Lets purposely turn this over to the iraqis. The WOT will last 25 years as al of you like to say but the war in iraq or at least our participation in it should have an end date.
