U.S. troop levels in Vietnam peaked at 536,100 when Johnson was still president. By the end of 1969, Nixon had reduced the troop level to 475,200 and had further reduced it to 334,600 by the end of 1970. By the time of the 1972 election, the troop level was down to 24,200.
