6/07 09:02 DJ Applied Materials: UVision More Vital As Chips Get
Smaller
(AMAT)

NEW YORK --Applied Materials, Inc. (AMAT) expects its new UVision
examination tool to be successful because it enables producers to find tiny
defects on today's smaller chips, Chief Executive Michael Splinter said told
CNBC Tuesday.

"Those smaller particles really didn't matter before in the larger
geometries," he said. As chips have progressively shrunk in size, he said, the
need for more detailed inspection has arisen.

The UVision system, the semiconductor industry's first laser 3D brightfield
inspection tool, enables chipmakers to uncover "killer" defects never seen
before, the company said when it released the product Monday.

"We're talking about 30 nanometers, an atom might be .3 nanometers so it's
100 atoms in width," Splinter said. "It examines for flaws throughout the
manufacturing process."

He said his company is a bit "uneven" in the market currently.

The company has applied to form a holding company in China, where it plans
to build a global development center.

Shares of Applied Materials closed at $16.82 Monday, down 0.3%.
