I would say smaller carriers have an advantage also.

Well, sure. I don't think they have pension funds at JetBlue or the other LCCs. But these are natural competitive market developments. Let the strong win. The majors screwed up a lot, and they are paying for it. There is a lot of discussion about changing the compensation packages and the retirement plans going forward without totally penalizing the current employee depending on a pension fund.

That's why unnaturally crippling those airlines who still have some strength and health and are trying to change and survive against the LCC is a bad idea. Further stacking the deck against them will exacerbate the already severe threats to their survival-- and the financial futures of many thousands of individuals.
Not to mention us, the taxpayer.
