Nixon was no moderate. Nixon made his career by red-baiting a la McCarthy. He was a total sell-out to the corporate special interests of the military-industrial complex. He was the one who first pandered to the religious right. Nixon was about power. If he ever did anything moderate it was because he thought it would win him an election. Nixon was what I would call a retro Bushie, that is a crooked conservative with no ethics, standards or morals who will do anything to win and grab power. So he was not a pure conservative nor pure anything. He was just Nixon. On the right, but often fighting for the middle. Nixon and Johnson deserve equal blame for Vietnam. Nixon had five years to end it and didn't until 55,000 Americans were dead. How many were killed between 1968 and 1973? The majority of US casualties.
