Los Alamos Lab Whistleblower Beaten
By Deborah Baker
The Associated Press

Monday 06 June 2005

Santa Fe, NM - A Los Alamos lab whistleblower scheduled to testify before Congress about alleged financial irregularities was badly beaten outside a bar - an attack his wife and lawyer believe was designed to silence him.

Police and the FBI said that they were investigating the circumstances of the incident which, according to his wife, left Tommy Hook hospitalized Monday with a broken jaw and other injuries.

Police Deputy Chief Eric Johnson said officers found Hook after responding to a reported assault at the Cheeks Night Club about 2 a.m. Sunday. He provided few other details.

"We are working jointly with the FBI, trying to determine what may have happened and what the assault may have stemmed from," Johnson said. FBI spokesman Bill Elwell described the agency's inquiry as preliminary.

Hook's wife, Susan, alleged the assailants told her husband during the attack: "If you know what's good for you, you'll keep your mouth shut."

Tommy Hook and another whistleblower sued the University of California in March, alleging that after they uncovered management failures, university and lab managers tried to make their jobs miserable so they would quit.

Hook, a former internal auditor who now works at another job at the lab, had been scheduled to testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee later this month.

According to Susan Hook, her husband received a call late Saturday from someone wanting to meet with him at a bar. She said her husband told her the man never showed up, but that as he was leaving the parking lot, a group of men pulled him from his car and beat him.

"They left him in the parking lot for dead," said Tommy Hook's lawyer, Robert Rothstein.

Rothstein said the assailants didn't take Hook's wallet, other personal belongings or car. Without any other motive, it appears the beating was related to his whistleblowing, Rothstein contended.

Susan Hook said her husband did not frequent bars.

Los Alamos lab spokesman Kevin Roark called the beating a "senseless and brutal act and should not be tolerated."

The lab and UC also issued a joint statement decrying the violence. "Director (Robert) Kuckuck, the University of California and the laboratory believe that any form of physical violence toward an individual is unacceptable," the statement read.

Republicans are hell-bent on destroying America and replacing it with a rapacious Empire-From-Hell.

Mezz,

Re: As always, please remember that your comments have more impact if you maintain a polite tone.

Facts belie your dictum. Some of the mightiest mouths in 'Merica are obnoxious louts pumping lying touts.

Does Rush Limbaugh maintain a polite tone? Well, no. Does Sean Hannity maintain a polite tone? Well, frankly, no. Does Bill O'Reilly maintain a polite tone? Well, "just shut up about that". Does David Horowitz maintain a polite tone? What? Are you nuts?

Politeness is the great curse of the weak. Here's a recent example of why the Democrats, albeit by far the more decent of the two main political parties, are living proof that they have even less impact due to an idiotic adherence to rules of polite etiquette that are ludicrous with the Republicans acting as nothing but criminal thugs.

Re: Another misquote leads to attack on Dean...this time its Edwards:

Here I was finally starting to warm up to Edwards due to his excellent populist speech at the Take Back America conference and he goes and attacks Dean. Blech. If what Dean said is considered so terrible you'd think Edwards and quasi-Republican Biden would be whining day and night about the always harsh and degrading speech of so many on the Repub side.

I am so sick of being labeled a liberal elite, unpatriotic and a sinner who is responsible for the deterioration of our godly culture. Dean says the obvious -- that many rich Repubs have never worked an honest job in their lives, especially one where getting time off to vote is a problem, and he is pilloried by egotists running for president in his own Party? Come on Edwards and Biden -- for once, think about the Party first and your own dreamy views about being President someday second.

Lets let the Truth be heard...Edwards and Biden have some 'splainin to
do and the public need to know what this attack was based on.

Once again, news infotainment folks, in this case the Sunday Pundit
shows, have taken a a partial sentence out of context to attack Gov Dean
and the revolution in democracy he is leading. This time it was
Senator's Biden and Edwards who took the bait of "questions" about a
misquote and attacked the Governor. Thanks to Thomas,Cole County Dem
Chair, for clarifying this.
*Here is the context...you be the judge.*

" You -- (applause continues) -- you know, the idea that you have to
wait on line for eight hours to cast your ballot in Florida -- there's
som! ething the matter with that. You think people can work all day and
then pick up their kids at child care or wherever, and get home and then
have a -- still manage to sandwich in an eight-hour vote? Well,
Republicans, I guess, can do that, because a lot of them have never made
an honest living in their lives. (Light applause.) But for ordinary
working people, who have to work eight hours a day, they have kids, they
got to get home to those kids, the idea of making them stand for eight
hours to cast their ballot for democracy is wrong. We ought to make
voting easier to do. Mail -- Oregon has got it right. (Applause.) "

Democrats Criticize Dean Attacks on GOP
Joseph Biden, John Edwards Criticize Howard Dean for His Rhetorical
Attacks on Republicans
The Associated Press

Jun. 5, 2005 - Democrats Joseph Biden and John Edwards are criticizing
party chairman Howard Dean, sa! ying his rhetorical attacks on Republicans
have gone too far.
< BR>Dean has said Republicans never made an honest living in their lives and
House Majority Leader Tom DeLay ought to go back to Houston where he can
serve his jail sentence. DeLay has not been accused of any crime.

Dean "doesn't speak for me with that kind of rhetoric and I don't think
he speaks for the majority of Democrats," Biden, the top Democrat on the
Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said Sunday on ABC's "This Week."

While discussing the hardship of working Americans standing in long
lines to vote, Dean said Thursday, "Republicans, I guess, can do that
because a lot of them have never made an honest living in their lives."

Edwards responded that Dean "is not the spokesman for the party."

Dean is "a voice. I don't agree with it," Edwards, a former senator and
the Democrats' vice presidential nominee in 2004, said Saturday at a
party fundraising dinner in Nashville, Tenn.

Asked about Dean's remark abou! t Republicans and honest living, GOP
chairman Ken Mehlman told NBC's "Meet the Press": "I'm not sure the best
way to win support in the red states is to insult the folks who live
there. I think that a better approach might be to talk about the issues
you're for."

Polite talk by the Democrats such as Biden and Edwards is the last thing this nation needs if it is to survive. Republicans are hell-bent on destroying America and replacing it with a rapacious Empire-From-Hell.

There is no polite way to say this.
