Yoicks!

I was development programmer in a place, and management decided to bring in all kinds of security stuff. Firewalls, authorization levels, centralized accounts, all that. Only trouble was they were also downsizing at the time, so your story doesn't surprise me.

I came to the conclusion there were two security issues. First, there wasn't enough and someone would do you dirty. Second, the thing wouldn't work properly and you couldn't get anything done.

Guess which was the more probable outcome? And this was a RESEARCH organization. All our data files were public! (That is, when the access machine wasn't broken.)

Because I wasn't able to get anything done (e.g. no print software), I started trading stocks over the Internet in 1998.

Funny how life works out.
