Your point is a good one, but it assumes that the status quo will remain the same for a very long time. I don't accept that assumption because a time will come when the Chinese determine that holding so many of our debts as their monetary reserves is unwise thanks to the other imbalances in our economy.

Plus, we will inevitably be their political and natural resource competitors [oil mostly] and they can use their US$ denominated reserves as a weapon in that competition.
