Labels seldom fit well. To say that I am a Christian does not define me very precisely. One of the tenets of SH is freedom from religion. Freedom does not equate to prohibition. Freedom means you are not required. When Stalin banished religion, he was taking freedom not granting it.

As you pointed out "Marx cited Humanism as an integral part of his theory." Iraq's rape rooms, and the mass graves uncovered in Iraq, Russia, Serbia, Cambodia, etc. and yet to be uncovered in China do not resolve well to the concept of Humanism.

Many of our founding fathers were Diests. They felt like we do now: religion is not a requirement or a bar to public service.
