I have close relatives by both blood and marriage that are pretty liberal on political and social issues - based on comments made over the years. I consider them both friends and loved ones. When we're together, we don't sit around and talk about controversial issues we likely disagree about - most such issues don't usually affect one's day to day life. I think everyone realizes we likely disagree on some things but respect one another anyway so don't go searching for things to argue about.

Plus, as is often the case, their values about real life concerns like family matters, child rearing, and so on are generally the same as mine as far as I can see. Lots of people may have liberal social and political ideas but nevertheless live their lives by conservative values.
