Re: the possibility of platinum-free ethanol fuel cells

Wow, thanks, that would be a huge break through. Stories like that are critical to keep up one's spirits -- not just because of the particulars, but much more importantly as a reminder of how fast things could change with some effort.

It's been known for a long time that alkaline fuel cells can work with liquid electrolytes using non-precious metals like nickle but I thought PEMs and platinum were still needed for decent performance.

Maybe when Matt Simmons puts on his brave cheerful face that's not quite believeable he'll turn out to be right after all; put humanity with its back against the wall and all sorts of magic may happen. Hey, it's not a thrilla' unless you really think there's a chance the hero (and everyone else) could die at the end.

Ethanol is an attractive fuel since it offers a higher specific energy than methanol, and is easier to handle.

Study: Ethanol Production Consumes Six Units Of Energy To Produce Just One
SD staffer, Science Daily
April 2, 2005.
Peer reviewed study finds that the energy consumed in corn farming and ethanol production is six times greater than what the ethanol end product provides to car engines in terms of power.
