LB,
I think the vietnam comparisons have far more to do with the home front than with the battlefield. There are few similaritites there. Worse case scenario for the US is a democratic Kurd state, an iranian influence. somewhat democratic, somewhat islamic shiaa state and the sunni provinces.
To get continued home front support, you need a timetable or benchmarks as biden called them today. Americans need to see an improving situation in iraq, particularly in the four provinces and especially in the new governments ability to govern and fight the insurgency. Folks here also need to know that all will not be lost in a three state outcome. We should all keep in mind that the oil is not with the sunnis. And Iran will aid the shiaa in any fight against sunni attackers as we will aid the Kurds.
The outcome in iraq may be as muddled as the current state but it is not all bad and its not like losing the whole country which is ultimately what happened in vietnam. mike
