Israel has denied Palestine their statehood for decades. How can Israel legally deny Palestine its statehood? The answer is they can't. Don't be naive.....they can and have. Palestine could declare its sovereignty tomorrow and then send Abbas to camp out at the U.N. to get a new resolution reconfirming the original resolution of 1948 that proclaimed Palestine a two state region (one for the Jews and one for the Palestinians). Do you understand what they mean when they say the West Bank and Gaza are the occuppied territories? That means they are occupied by the Israelis. The lines of demarcation as to what's Israeli and what's Palestinian have been blurred over the decades. Do you know what is one of the main reasons the Israelis are pulling out of the West Bank and Gaza after spending millions if not billons on building new settlements and new suburbs in East Jerusalem? Its demographics. The Arabs will outnumber the Jews. Even in Israel proper, Jews make up only 80% of the population. In roughly 30 or 40 years, given the different birth rates and the out migration of Jews, its expected that the Jewish and Arabic populations will reach parity. That will signal the death knell for the Jewish state. If Israel tries to annex the WB and Gaza........even only the parts where the settlers are, parity will be reached much faster. Its a major dilemma that has the Israelis worried. There is this big illusion that only the Israelis or Americans can deliver statehood to the Palestinians, but it is nothing more than that: an illusion. All Palestine needs to do is declare it and then fight for it: diplomatically and militarily. The only issue is not simply statehood. What will be the borders since Israel has changed those borders somewhat since 1948 and how the issue of right-of-return is settled. The only real remaining step would be to negotiate state lines with Israel. Lines can be negotiated and they can even be fought over, because both the Palestinians and Israelis have the men willing to fight. However, sovereignty is not a gift the Israeli can deny the Palestinians. It is theirs for the taking. They simply refuse to take that step. Ask yourself, why? Again, because that's not the only issue on the table. BTW I have never said that the Palestinians are saints in this matter. It takes two to make life miserable and the Palestians have done their share of ca ca.
