Here is the early poop. I believe this is quite accurate but I reserve the right to adjust the numbers after the official press releases.

The Army recruited about 5,000 last month for active duty and reserves.

The assigned quota was 8,050.

Please recall DOD got involved mid-month, and I predicted they would crank up the smoke machine.

Well, here comes the smoke. DOD lowered the quota to 6,700.

So instead of a near 40% shortfall, in two days the Army will report a 25% shortfall. That will look like a huge improvement over April's recruiting shortfall of 42%.

For the first 8 months of FY 2005 the Army will have recruited approx 48,200 out of an annual goal of 102,275 plus 30,000 more (for a total of 132,275) to increase strength as mandated by Congress.

Bottom line is the Army is currently some 40,000 recruits below the assigned 2005 mission.
