Hi Gustave - "Clash of 'Civilizations' " Europe might join in out of nostalgia for World War I.... Yugoslavia and the Balkans headed in that direction.

I don't think U.S. Citizens would give up any rights - we didn't when attacked the Barbary Pirates.

Like it or not, the damage will be hugely asymetric.

Cartenga delenda est.

Carthage must be destroyed Cato

I will have to say that after reading your posts, that am becoming happier with US military spending, especially on strategic weapons....;-)

Perhaps the USA should make a public announcement that if there is a major non-conventional strike by Islamic Jihad on the USA, half the Moslem monuments around the world will be removed, starting with that big rock in Mecca.

<The point being that the US and its allies can intimidate/"persuade" a number of Arab governments from extensive support of terrorism.

Well, I'm afraid that "intimidation" and "persuasion" go both ways.... What would be left of the US polity after it's been hit with a major non-conventional strike? You'll have to kiss all your rights goodbye... The Pentagon will take over... TV newscasts will be presented by military officers... I guess the US will look pretty much like a Disneyesque gulag...

That would make Islamic Jihad a bit more circumspect about their Jihads all over the world.

It would be interesting to see whether Islamic Jihad claimed credit for such a strike.

The USA didn't develop umpteen megatonnes of thermonuclear weaponry not to use them. They have already used two nuclear bombs. Those many megatonnes all work and are ready to fire. I doubt that they are a bluff, with no fuel in the tanks.

After a few thousand nukes have gone off across the Moslem world, that should reduce attacks somewhat. If there was a second attack, half the remaining monuments could be removed. If a third, then half the remaining ones could be removed. At some stage, Islamic Jihad would run out of steam.
