People who change their deeply held principles because of personal experience didn't really hold them in the first place. And I suspect that most people who don't support the death penalty do support life sentences without the possibility of parole for dangerous rapists/murderers. I don't think it's fair to suggest that opposing the death penalty means you sanction violence in any way. And the study I read recently pointed out that victims' families who thought they would get closure when the evil one was executed often do not. There are no easy answers here.
