There is no easy answer here. I would only say that MLK, Jr had a knack for getting in people's faces pretty emphatically. But he had JFK and LBJ to back him up inside the Beltway. Even moderate Democrats get a bad case of the willies when the gay rights issue comes up directly now.

And of course the partisan snipers make a reasoned discussion almost impossible in the realm of public debate, such as it is.
