I don't think one has to be for the word as you describe it, gay marriage... with emphasis on the Marriage bit. It is threatening to anyone who is not gay. However, I do think that Gays should be afforded the rights of marriage as defined in the following:

Right for access to partner (or whatever you call him or her )
in hospitals with ability to make decisions about health care including those that are in a Will.Right now two people can live together for years... some as long as 20 plus and have a family step in and deny the partner access to the other in serious illness. Family comes first.

Right to sell a home and have the deduction of $ 500.000
that marriage partners have.

Right to have the deductions on Income Tax that is afforded couples.

Right to adopt children

Right to have partner's pension come to surviving partner.

Right to have family membership in organizations that give a break to family members.

Right to have acceptance into the armed services without fear other than that of being killed in service.

There are a lot of economic advantages to having a union, marriage etc. that those who are not married are denied.

I am not familiar with them all. I just know that the above are what have been stated to me.. as issues that need attention.

Whether it is considered civil rights or just rights that should be granted to all who choose to couple in a legal union or join in a way recognized by the term that is currently used.. marriage.
