The vietnam comparision Mike is only the situation at home. Imagine iraq war if it stays more or less the same for another 5 years. There are way more leftys out there today and this admin whether you like it or not has a credibility problem with regular americans similar to that of LBJ in 1968.

"Iraq is (among other reasons) a war to liberate a long oppressed and horribly abused people. I believe that is appropriate."

Check the map there are folks in africa who would rejoice at our arrival. It would be nice if iraq could attain democracy and its three groups learn to live with each other. Earlier i thought they would. Now i think they need pressure from us to even have a chance at such an outcome or we might have to live with three states rather than one. If we can do it with the old yugoslavia, we can do it with iraq even if sunniland remains a quagmire after we leave. Having said that, the federal somewhat dem state is the best outcome but time is not on our side, not necessarily from a military pov but from the homefront problem we discussed.

The single biggest difference between the situations is Vietnam received enormous support from both the USSR and China. I do not see any significant power assisting the terrorists in Iraq.

That's true but perhaps even bigger is the fact that there is no hostile "North Iraq" ready to invade when we clear out.

If the insurgency in Iraq is analogous to the Vietcong, there is no NVA to back it up, or take over when the insurgency is weakened. As you well know it wasn't Vietcong guerilla operations that caused the government of South Vietnam to fall.
