Depends on exactly what you would consider to be fading away, but there are plenty of insurgencies that didn't win and are no longer active, and there are others that are marginalized. Insurgencies that didn't win - El Salvador, the insurgency by the Malayan Communist Party, the Shining Path has at least been marginalized, the communist insurgency in Oman supported by South Yemen was quickly put down, the insurgency by the Shiites against Saddam was put down, and the insurgency by the Kurds might have been if we didn't set up "the no-fly zone". The insurgency in the Ukraine against the USSR after WWII was put down. I could come up with more if you really want me to look for them. The battle is as much political as military, esp. if you aren't contemplating genocide or "ethnic cleansing" in order to enforce your will. Insurgents have a goal........an agenda. They are not simply crazed people out of control. I agree with your comment, at least about most of the insurgents. I don't see how it is a response to the statement you quoted. It wasn't even about the insurgents. Most insurgents learn OJT. Of course. My point from the beginning was only that it is not useless or silly to talk about training insurgents. Often they do receive training, sometimes fairly formal training. I didn't say it was impossible to have an insurgency without formal training. Not so. Cambodia, and Laos fell to the communist in addition to South Vietnam. That's hardly the falling of dominoes. It is indeed the falling of dominoes. the theory was that all of SE Asia would succumb to communism including India. The theory was different depending on who held it or talked about it. Everything from perhaps less than what actually happened to the communists directly threatening the US. The communists in Vietnam would bring down India or threaten the US was only held by the most extreme and or less intelligent proponents of the domino theory, and they made up only a minority. Saying that all people who were concerned about "dominos falling" where in this extreme end, is like saying that all male members of the Democratic party can't keep it in their pants at work and supporting the argument by pointing out Bill Clinton. Two dominos did fall, and one or two others came under some pressure. Sure the crazy nightmares of the extreme didn't come true but that doesn't mean the basic idea wasn't correct. Tim
