As I said in several previous posts, the US Right --that is, basically, the GOP-- couldn't, and still cannot, afford to jettison its far-right constituency because that would spell the rise of a powerful far-right, third party in the US. Imagine a similar predicament in, say, France: the Gaullist UMP party merging with the Front National to form one, big Rightist party. How would foreign observers analyze the French political landscape?

That's right.......they would form a third party if they could. In truth, they are into everything as it is........suddenly, there is Christian everything here.....Christian mortgagors, Christian RE agents, Christian bankers, Christian radio, Christian singers etc. And the far right is also the most solid bloc of the GOP.....a dilemma for them. They can't afford to let them go but some of the far right's values are anathema to the rest of the GOP.

However, what I am hoping for, is a backlash against the far right. If you look at US history, the far right has come to the surface a number of times. Each time, they overplayed their cards and eventually got kicked to the curb. I am hoping that will happen again.

And should that backlash occur, it also will put the GOP back in its place.
